This was made for an art installation by Roger Tilton at the Perma Diirty art space in Claremont. Roger wanted to play with the idea of multiple levels of space (the main bird sound was originally an "in the room with you" sort of sound but it needed to go further away for this version) as well as some dreams he had involving Bigfoot, a camping space, and an empty white room. He also asked that there be a lot of highs and lows. So my starting point was basically trying to figure out what he imagined that would be in my head based on what he has heard me do.
This turned into an interesting way to work: taking some parameters and then trying to do a "me impression" tailored to what I might think a specific person is hearing in what I do. This is something that I've been afraid of doing by accident (and probably have) and that fear made me think about when such a thing would be acceptable, creatively. Would it be an admission of being out of ideas (as I feared) if going in that direction is actually the best starting point given the circumstances? I'm still not sure and while this music worked well in my head with what the installation was, I feel like it would be interesting on its own terms as a self-commentary in either a big or small way.
I've categorized this as ambient because it's the first thing I've done which I feel accurately fits the requirements of old school ambient: it rewards passive and active listening equally. My other stuff is way more rewarding up close than it is just sort of playing in the background.
